The Blizzard of 1993
The Blizzard of 1993
- The blizzard occurred in March 1993 and is often referred to as the Storm of the Century.
- It brought heavy snowfall, strong winds, and extremely cold temperatures to various regions.
we huddled around the fireplace at my Papaw Willie's and Granny Hazel's. I never will forget the smell of that wood smoke sitting by Papaw playing checkers. Granny Hazel was a busy bee and decided some neighbors may have not been as prepared as us, so Granny went to cooking up a storm. No electricity she was cooking on top of that fire and a Coleman camp stove. She boxed up a box for each neighbor she deemed us to deliver to. We loaded up a wagon behind the four-wheeler and took off through the snow. I still laugh at us with those delicious smells bouncing about in that wagon that had attracted every neighborhood dog. So, there we trudged through the snow with a dog parade chasing behind us. True to Granny's thoughts many families were blessed with that food delivery. We got back to tell Granny of the reception the food boxes had and she had already dug into the freezer and went to the smokehouse in preparations to make more deliveries. That was my Granny she always fed many. Each Sunday she would have multiple rounds of friends and family eating at her dining room table. I often marveled at how she could do it all. I've always been hot-natured and even though that blizzard and freezing temps had us hunkering down in the holler Papaw Willie had the house so warm I was smoldering so when Dad said he was going up to check the pipes at our house I begged to go with him. We ended up staying the night at the house I guess Dad probably needed a solitude break and I just needed the cooler temps to breathe a minute. I was covered up and cozy in my bedroom and I remember just as I drifted off to sleep Dad came into the bedroom and put another blanket on me covering up my head. I smile a father's love he had brought me one of his blankets to make sure I was warm enough tucking me in I had the best Daddy. The best family. I'm so thankful for their lessons.
